Full Report
In the early hours of 25 February 1942, anti-aircraft batteries over Los Angeles fired more than 1,400 rounds at an unidentified slow-moving object hanging over the city. Despite the barrage, the object reportedly suffered no damage and slowly departed. Three civilians died of heart attacks during the alert; five more died in car accidents. The 'battle' was officially attributed to a weather balloon, a verdict still disputed.
