Full Report
Civilian pilot Kenneth Arnold reported observing nine crescent-shaped objects flying in formation past Mount Rainier at speeds he estimated at over 1,200 mph. He described their motion as 'like a saucer skipping across water', a phrase the press shortened to 'flying saucer'. Arnold's report is widely considered the start of the modern UFO era.
